A Sustainable Seaweed Culture Model Based on Ecological Carrying Capacity and Social Dynamics in Bali (Case Study: Nusa Lembongan Marine Conservation Area, Klungkung Regency, Bali)
Abstrak:
Budidaya rumput laut Eucheuma cottonii di Nusa Lembongan, Bali, menghadapi tekanan ganda berupa degradasi ekologi akibat intensifikasi budidaya tanpa mempertimbangkan daya dukung kawasan, serta pergeseran sosial budaya masyarakat pembudidaya akibat perkembangan pariwisata yang pesat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) menganalisis kondisi dan daya dukung ekologi perairan Nusa Lembongan bagi budidaya rumput laut berkelanjutan; (2) mengkaji dinamika sosial budaya masyarakat pembudidaya rumput laut; serta (3) merumuskan model keberlanjutan budidaya rumput laut yang mengintegrasikan daya dukung ekologi dan dinamika sosial pesisir. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Kawasan Konservasi Perairan Nusa Lembongan, Desa Jungutbatu dan Lembongan, Kecamatan Nusa Penida, Kabupaten Klungkung, Bali, selama tiga tahun. Pendekatan mixed methods digunakan, mengombinasikan analisis kuantitatif (pengukuran parameter kualitas air, laju pertumbuhan mutlak, specific growth rate, dan analisis daya dukung perairan) dan kualitatif (survei kuesioner terhadap 100 responden, wawancara mendalam, Focus Group Discussion, dan analisis jaringan sosial menggunakan UCINET). Kearifan lokal awig-awig berbasis konsep Tri Hita Karana diinkorporasikan sebagai variabel sosial-kelembagaan dalam model keberlanjutan. Pembuatan peta tematik sebaran lokasi budidaya menggunakan perangkat lunak GIS. Penelitian berada pada TKT 2-3. Luaran utama berupa model konseptual-operasional keberlanjutan budidaya rumput laut yang dapat menjadi acuan kebijakan pengelolaan kawasan konservasi perairan. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada pencapaian SDGs 14 melalui pengelolaan ekosistem pesisir dan perikanan budidaya yang berkelanjutan berbasis masyarakat.

Abstract:
Eucheuma cottonii seaweed aquaculture in Nusa Lembongan, Bali, faces a dual pressure: ecological degradation resulting from aquaculture intensification without considering the area’s carrying capacity, and sociocultural shifts among farming communities driven by rapid tourism development. This study aims to: (1) analyze the ecological conditions and carrying capacity of Nusa Lembongan waters for sustainable seaweed aquaculture; (2) examine the sociocultural dynamics of the seaweed farming community; and (3) formulate a seaweed aquaculture sustainability model that integrates ecological carrying capacity and coastal social dynamics. The research is conducted in the Marine Protected Area of Nusa Lembongan, covering Jungutbatu and Lembongan Villages, Nusa Penida District, Klungkung Regency, Bali, over three years. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining quantitative analyses (water quality parameter measurements, absolute growth rate, specific growth rate, and water carrying capacity analysis) and qualitative methods (questionnaire surveys with 100 respondents, in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions, and social network analysis using UCINET). The local wisdom of awig-awig based on the Tri Hita Karana concept is incorporated as a socio-institutional variable in the sustainability model. Thematic maps of aquaculture site distribution are produced using GIS software. The research is positioned at TRL 2-3. The primary output is a conceptual-operational sustainability model for seaweed aquaculture that can serve as a policy reference for MPA management. This research contributes to SDG 14 through community-based, sustainable management of coastal ecosystems and aquaculture.
